•Nine GSK genes were identified in the potato genome and systematically analyzed.•Segmental duplication mechanism caused the expansion of StGSK gene family in potato.•StGSK genes are expressed in different tissues and respond to abiotic stress.•Overexpression of StSK21 enhances sensitivity to salt stress in Arabidopsis plants.
