•Factors that influence student–teacher relationships for children with ADHD are unknown.•Compared to peers children with ADHD experience poorer student–teacher relationships.•Within the ADHD group, boys and children with conduct problems had poor quality teacher relationships.•Prosocial skills may foster better student–teacher relationships for all children.
