Attempts to synthesise acerogenins A and C, diaryl ether type macrocyclic diarylheptanoid constituents of Acer nikoense by macrocyclization involving the formation of (i) a diarylether bond or (ii) one of the bonds in the C7 chain resulted in polymeric products or the title compound.
