Can patients with psychological distress achieve comparable functional outcomes and satisfaction after hallux valgus surgery? A 2-year follow-up study

•VAS and AOFAS were poorer in the distressed group at 6 months.•There was no difference in postoperative scores or change in scores at 2 years.•A lower proportion of distressed patients were satisfied at 6 months (65% vs 79%).•Satisfaction was equally high at 2 years (80% vs 79%).•SF-36 MCS in distressed patients improved by 7.4 points.
