Registered nurses’ perspectives on how patients with multi-drug resistant organisms experience isolation

•Nurses perceived source isolation as an essential intervention in the control and prevention of infection but acknowledged that these patients commonly experienced Being-in-a-changed-world.•Nurses have a greater awareness of the challenging experiences encountered by their patients but could not discuss methods of how to improve.•Nurses believed that source isolation is unfavourable for many patients except those who preferred their privacy.
