•The palm Nypa fruticans is an important component of mangrove forests in the Indo West Pacific.•Litter production by Nypa was the highest recorded for any mangrove.•Aboveground biomass and annual production by Nypa were in the middle of the range for mangroves.•Production by Nypa needs to be included in the contribution of mangroves to global carbon budgets.
