The role of electricity in decarbonizing European road transport – Development and assessment of an integrated multi-sectoral model

•By 2050, the fuel share of electricity in the EU road transport sector reaches 37%.•By 2050, the share of power-to-x fuels in EU road transport reaches 27%.•Road transport sector drives additional electricity demand of 1200TWh in EU in 2050.•Decoupling the two sectors may significantly overestimate the total system costs.•Decoupling causes production costs to be miscalculated and distorts merit order.
