Epidemiology of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae among healthcare students, at the Portuguese Red Cross Health School of Lisbon, Portugal

•Occurrence of ESBL producers, carbapenem-resistant and colistin-resistant Enterobacterales was evaluated among 111 rectal samples collected from students in Portugal.•Student were from a single medical school, and had regular contact with hospitalised patients.•Samples were screened for ESBL production, carbapenemase production and colistin resistance strains using selective media.•A high rate of ESBL producers was identified among the students, whereas no isolate showing acquired resistance to colistin was identified.•identified at very high rate, although this ESBL type is usually identified in animal isolates.
