Validation of EDGE , a Reality-Based Laparascopic Box Trainer for Quantitative Psychomotor Skill Assessment

Computerized analysis of tool motion and force recordings from a multi-institutional study of laparoscopic surgeons performing dry lab tasks discriminated psychomotor skill level and correlated with a Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Skills (FLS) evaluation score. The research demonstrates a means of automatically quantifying psychomotor skill immediately upon the completion of a task using an integrated laparoscopy trainer and motion capture system called the Electronic Data Generation and Evaluation (EDGE) Platform by Simulab Corporation. Additionally, the FLS scoring method was found to provide no significant benefit over task time alone.
