Abstract
The Junipers Phoenicia is the major plant that covers 70% of eastern mountains series known as Al Jabal Al Akhdar, in the North East of Libya. The Junipers Phoenicia is a species that has been sharply deteriorated and affected by unidentified diseases over large scales of the Al Jabal. To investigate this phenomenon, we have used remote sensing data over a selected region to study the spatial distribution of this effect within the total vegetation coverage of Jabal Al Akhdar. In this study, remotely sensed data from Landsat 8 Landsat, EMT+ and SRTM DEM 90 m spatial resolution images were analyzed. The NDVI was implemented in Envi. 4.5 software which is associated with spectral reflectance measurements that acquire both the visible (red) and near-infrared images. The obtained data were used to map the possible factors that may contribute to junipers Phoenicia diseases. These factors may include geological, topographical slope, hydrology and soil properties. Our results show that there is no single factor controlling junipers Phoenicia diseases, however, it indicates that the diseases of junipers are less severe at sites of the flanks of the major wadis than those at sites near the urban areas.
