For Review O nly Fusion : Managing Healthcare Records at Cloud Scale

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) enable healthcare providers, payers, patients and researchers to move towards improved coordination of care and access to health information. However, realizing the benefits of EHRs within the context of the larger healthcare ecosystem requires the controlled sharing of EHR data, which is a technically and legally complex issue. Managing EHRs is particularly difficult for small providers because they lack resources and expertise to enable such sharing. Fusion is a research project that aims to create an open, cloud-based platform for large-scale, lowcost management of healthcare data. The goal of Fusion is to support patient-centric management of electronic health records; enable secure seamless sharing of such records among healthcare providers, patients, payers, and researchers; and create new opportunities for development of applications that can leverage EHR data to improve quality of care, healthcare efficiency, and medical outcomes. A research prototype of Fusion is being built on HP Cloud Compute and HP Cloud Object Storage to demonstrate its feasibility.
