Abstract
Introduction: In the last stages of CKD, dialysis therapy or transplantation is necessary. Among these options, kidney transplantation is one that offers better survival and quality of life. It is known that in the first months after kidney transplantation, these patients are more susceptible to infections, especially those located in the urinary tract and surgical wound with a predominance of opportunistic infections caused by viral and fungal agents. In addition, studies have associated hospitalization with a higher prevalence of oral disorders. Objective: To evaluate the oral condition and prevalence of alterations in hospitalized renal transplant patients. Method: The observational and quantitative study was performed with 50 patients who were in the kidney transplant ward. Data collection was performed through anamnesis, clinical examination, and data of the medical record, and a personal instrument was filled out. Results: The most frequent mouth symptoms were dry mouth (48%), bad breath (46%), metallic taste sensation (12%) and oral burning sensation (2%). Of the most prevalent oral alterations, the tongue is palpable, followed by a traumatic ulcer, pseudomembranous candidiasis, and gingival hyperplasia. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a difficulty in obtaining guidelines on oral hygiene after renal transplantation. There is also a predilection for jugal tongue and mucosa with regard to the appearance of oral alterations in renal transplant patients.
