•Endovascular treatment of femoropopliteal occlusions does not offer satisfactory long term results.•Stent mechanical characteristics appear to be the predominant factor for the treatment of femoropopliteal arterial disease.•Flexible, heparin coated stents appear to offer excellent long term results for the treatment of femoropopliteal occlusions.
