•We corroborated a correlation between financial stress and DV-related events.•Number of DV episodes dramatically increased during the 2007 financial crisis.•African American and Native American persons were disproportionally impacted.•Co-existing psychiatric conditions and in-hospital mortality also increased.•In addition, charges per hospitalization escalated during the economic recession.
