Early assessment of the impact of mitigation measures on the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy.

•The impact of mitigation measures on the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak in Italy was assessed.•A progressive decrease in the curve of patients in intensive care (IC) was found.•The measures could have been effective in flattening the epidemic curve.•IC capacity was almost doubled before the national health system was overwhelmed.
