Abstract
•Non-polio enterovirus is a major pathogen for the common CNS infectious diseases in Chinese children.•Enteroviruses other than poliovirus and enterovirus 71 can cause life-threatening encephalitis and severe sequelae.•Chinese children older than 4 years of age were more susceptible to enterovirus-associated CNS diseases.•The distribution of enterovirus seotypes was not found to be correlated with the severity of CNS diseases and the age groups.
