•This study focused on population of resource-limited settings.•A dose-response relationship of the night sleep duration and sleep initiation time with anxiety symptoms among chinese rural population was found.•Too-little/too-late sleep has a higher risk than too-much/too-early sleep.•Night sleep duration and sleep initiation time jointly increase the odds of anxiety symptoms.
