•This survey informs on orthodontic residents (opinions, plans, and demographics).•Survey results over a period of 26 years show increases in the number of female respondents, tuition costs, and educational debts and decreases in stipends.•Educational debts are significantly associated with anxiety.•Educational debts influence decisions about where to work.
