•Butanol flux and selectivity suppressed in the presence of butyric acid.•The more butyric acid the poorer the butanol pervaporation.•Mixture pervaporation selectivity strongly affected by adsorption tendency.•High butyric acid concentration and low pH caused nearly 90% butanol flux reduction.
