•Analysed the cultural ecosystem services (CES) provision of local landscapes.•Analysed the perception of CES from local perspective in cross-culture region.•Demographic characteristics influence the perception of CES both directly and indirectly.•The fundamental human needs may shape the importance of landscapes features on CES perception.•Provided a tool to assess the importance of landscapes without land use data.
