Effect of basalt fiber on the low-temperature performance of an asphalt mixture in a heavily frozen area

•The changing trend of each evaluation index with the fiber contents and temperatures was discussed.•Basalt fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture has outstanding adaptability to low temperatures.•The fracture type of basalt fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture was distinguished.•The optimum content of basalt fiber in heavily frozen areas was recommended based on low-temperature performance.•The micromorphology and microstructures of basalt fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture were observed.
