•A low cost photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor is developed for hexavalent chromium ion (Cr(VI)).•This sensor displays polarity-switchable photocurrent with increasing Cr(VI) concentration.•Large detection range, from ppb level to ppm level, is realized by this sensor.
