•We designed a high ferrite Portland clinker (HFPC) with 47% C3S, and 20% C4AF.•Certain content of CuO improved the hydration and the chloride-binding capacity of HFPC.•Mechanism of capacity improvement by CuO was also analysis by Density Functional Theory.
