Systematizing scientific laboratory work by a workflow and template for electronic laboratory notebooks

•Good scientific practice can be abstracted and schematized in a workflow.•A template was developed to systematize scientific work, especially in the laboratory.•ELN embedding of the template provides opportunities: cocreate, share, validate.•The template is provided for use and adaptation in the supplementary information.
