•La1-xBaxCoO3 perovskites are prepared, characterized and tested as NSR catalyst.•La0.7Ba0.3CoO3 achieved maximum NO-to-NO2 conversion of 66 %, mainly related to oxygen vacancies.•La0.7Ba0.3CoO3 achieved maximum NOx storage and reduction performance.•Higher NO-to-NO2 conversion and NOx storage capacity promotes NOx-to-N2 reduction.•La0.7Ba0.3CoO3 more promising base material than La0.7Sr0.3CoO3 for NSR system.
