•CaP granules can replace mined phosphate rock for application as fertilizer.•35% of PO43− in CaP granules dissolved in citric acid and 85% in H2SO4.•Glowed (550 °C) granules contained 15 wt% of p (35 wt% of P2O5).•Heavy metals and organic micropollutants are below european regulatory limits.
