•Midir eliminates the single point of failure generally affecting low-level software.•Simple hardware devices prevent faulty adversaries from corrupting resources.•Fault isolation and consensus in MPSoCs enables distributed fault tolerance.•An efficient Byzantine fault tolerant microhypervisor can be constructed over Midir.•Midir outperforms a shared-memory implementation of MinBFT by 1 order of magnitude.
