•A series of CHCs are prepared by one-step rapid pyrolysis activation method.•Pore structure characteristics of CHCs were analyzed and discussed in details.•CHC specific surface area and pore volume reached 415.85 m2/g and 0.1748 cm3/g.•Effects of temperature, oxygen and steam on pore structure of CHCs were revealed.
