•Operating regime for tri-reforming of combustion exhaust gases is bound by CO2 conversion, temperature and coke formation.•Steam reforming, dry reforming and reverse water gas shift reactions dominate above the zero-coke equilibrium temperature.•Tri-reforming of oxy-combustion exhaust gases converts more CO2 per unit mass of CH4 into synthesis gas.
