•Cut mark, osteological and taphonomic study of 21 Bronze Age partial horse burials from Mongolia.•Results show presence of limb and tail elements, intentional slaughter, disarticulation, and removal of meat and soft tissue.•Proliferation of horse ritual in eastern Eurasia linked important economic/dietary role for horses.
