Prediction of initial transient behavior with stationary heating during laser powder bed fusion processes

•A model to simulate PBF process with stationary laser heat source was developed.•Volumetric energy addition was applied to particles to decrease calculation time.•Keyhole welding and particle melting processes were captured by the model.•The model was in excellent agreement for keyhole and molten bead geometry.
