•Average RA was 358 ± 283 g C m−2 yr−1 across the global terrestrial ecosystems.•RA varied significantly among ecosystem types and climate zones.•Unimodal relations were found between RA and soil sand, NPP and ANPP.•TBCA was the most important factor controlling RA globally using the SEM analysis.
