•The first direct constraint the Xiaorequanzi VMS deposit formed at 345–360 Ma.•Chalcopyrite Re-Os dating constraint the mineralization to 354–357 Ma.•Zircon U-Pb dating constraint ore-hosted rocks to 345–360 Ma, mineralized granite to 354 Ma.•Xiaorequanzi VMS deposit most likely formed by extension of Dananhu-Haerlik arc.•Arc-extension and subsequently hot oceanic slab subduction contribute to mineralization in CAOB.
