•Two skarn alteration stages are associated with Fe mineralization at Chagangnuoer.•Causative intrusions have zircon U-Pb ages of 329 ± 2 and 317 ± 3 Ma, respectively.•Stable isotopes suggest a dominantly hydrothermal fluid source of magmatic origin.•Minor non-magmatic sources were circulated into the fluids for skarns and Fe ores.
