Experimental study of flame expansion induced by water droplet impact on the burning cooking oil

•The short-lived flame expansion accompanied by flame hairs was observed.•Droplet size determines the flame expansion scale at the fixed falling height.•Falling height obviously affects flame expansion scale for small droplets.•Effects of droplet size and falling height on flame expansion scale were quantified.
