•Transparent a-Si:H solar cells are developed using very thin back OMO electrodes.•Thin OMO electrode composed of Al-doped ZnO and Ag is 110 nm thick.•Cell efficiency and transmittance are experimentally and numerically studied.•Laser-patterning optimization is presented for thin OMO electrodes.•Transparent modules are optimally designed using equivalent-circuit model.
