Cytotoxicity and hemostatic activity of chitosan/carrageenan composite wound healing dressing for traumatic hemorrhage

•Polysaccharide based hemostatic dressing was successfully fabricated.•The dressing was fabricated via ionic complexation and freeze-drying, without any cross-linking agent.•Mesoporous chitosan/carrageenan composite dressing had faster blood clotting ability.•Composite dressing showed good biocompatibility and in vitro cell proliferation for wound healing.•Biological studies confirmed the hemostatic activity of the developed dressing.
