Abstract
•Non-invasive analysis of Banqueting House Whitehall ceiling paintings by sir Peter Paul Rubens.•In-situ use of XRF spectroscopy, integrated XRF/X-ray diffraction, FT-IR reflection spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography.•Pigments identified by XRF and XRD agree with studies of other Rubens’ paintings.•FT-IR reflection analysis provided information about secondary compounds (oxalates, sulfates).•OCT analysis revealed the presence of several varnish layers on the paintings.
