Snow as a parameter of bryophyte niche partitioning in snow-beds of the Tatra Mountains (Western Carpathians)

•Liverworts display different responses to microclimate than it is the case with mosses.•Humidity significantly affects the occurrence of the species of both groups in snow-beds.•Increased humidity supports moss domination.•Liverworts dominate in dry, cool habitats with persistent snow cover.
