Abstract
Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are atypical photoreceptors that are different from classical cone and rod cells. The primary role of ipRGCs is to signal light for largely subconscious, non-image vision such as photoentrainment of circadian rhythm and pupillary light reflex. Recent researches have revealed additional roles for ipRGCs in communication with synapses around, conscious vision reception and pathogenesis of some diseases. Here we review the research advances of morphology, functions and clinical applications of ipRGCs. .
