Abstract
•Leishmania DNA was detected in phlebotomine sand flies in a humid tropical region of Veracruz, Mexico, using ITS-1.•Leishmania infantum DNA was detected in eight sand fly species.•First molecular detection of Leishmania infantum in Pa. aclydifera, Pa. carpenteri, Da. beltrani and Br. mesai.•Entomological surveys and epidemiological studies are needed to determine dynamics of Leishmania transmission by sand fly species in Mexico.
