•cSP-A and cLL mRNA were highly expressed in lungs compared to other tissues.•mpared to other tissues.•2. Co-expression of cSP-A and cLL were mainly detected in epithelial cells of the chicken respiratory system.•In contrast to cLL, which seems to have a wide distribution, cSP-A is mainly restricted to mucosal surfaces of the chicken respiratory tract.
