Disturbance during emergency department work – A concept analysis

•A definition of disturbance within the emergency department context have been made.•The concepts interruption and disturbance should not be used as synonyms.•A negatively perceived interruption could be classified as a disturbance.•When trying to minimize interruptions, focusing on the situations that create disturbance in workflow is important for patient safety.
