•The results of this study are able to support the nurse regarding dialogue with families about organ and tissue donation in a pediatric setting.•Because it is a sensitive subject and professionals demonstrate insecurities and different personal opinions about the death of a child or adolescent, the study outlines an approach for parents or guardians.•It demonstrates its importance for presenting and stimulates evidence-based practice on this subject.
