•HFO-1234ze(E) decomposition mechanisms were investigated.•Under mild conditions, HFO-1234ze(E) decomposed to C2C3 HFC gases.•Under harsh conditions, liquids, coke and long-chain HFC gases were formed.•HF elimination and HF addition were the main decomposition mechanisms.
