•We analyze distributional equity (DE) of public funds to long-term care (LTC) payers.•DE means eligibility criteria set nationally and funds allocated based on needs-formula.•Most LTC systems do not fully meet distributional equity.•LTC systems may prefer local priority-setting instead of DE.•Allocation formulae for LTC public funds are basic and deserve further attention.
