•This study assessed the impact of urban water body restoration on water ecology.•Riparian plants, phytoplankton, amphibians, fish, and microorganisms were assessed.•With improving water quality, fish diversity increased significantly.•Fish diversity correlated negatively with the concentration of pollutants.
