•High activity AlOOH catalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal method.•AlOOH has excellent stability and better catalytic activity for Al hydrolysis.•The relation between activity of AlOOH and its preparation condition was established.•The catalytic activity of AlOOH depends on its crystallinity and grain size.
