•The render layers of 11 Roman cisterns in Nora (Sardinia, Italy) have been analyzed.•Several diachronic plastering phases were recognized.•Pozzolanic reaction was evaluated with a mineralogical-spectroscopic approach.•The formation of M-S-H gels was reported for the first time in ancient binders.•Combinations of Punic and Roman technologies were observed.
