•Irrigation scheduling assists the system to use stored water more efficiently.•Optimal water volume is estimated for the following day to pump sufficient water.•The comprehensive model of the storage reduces both losses and electricity costs.•The proposed management system reduces annual electricity costs by more than 31%.•The proposed management system is experimentally tested.
